Traveling has become an integral part of our lives – and, rather obviously, dogs have to come into the picture somehow. Leaving them behind might often be a good option, but let’s face it – it would be much better if they could come along on our vacations. But, should a health issue arise, are there ways of ensuring that they are going to get the same treatment as back home? Here are a few practical tips to give you a good idea about how to get your dog cared for when traveling.
Early Considerations
First of all, it is of the utmost importance to know what to pack for your dogs. Think about what constitutes your dog’s daily routine, make a list of those necessities and pack them together. The list will be different for each dog – for example, you will need significantly different items for a rambunctious puppy than a quiet senior dog – but the main point to remember is to bring a little bit more than what you think you will need.
Medical supplies should be on your mind at all times, particularly if your dog needs special medication or supplements that might be difficult to replenish away from home. And don’t forget to pack your dog’s favorite toys – that will make him more comfortable on the road. Finally, consider bringing puppy pads as well, even if your dog doesn’t typically use them. Your dog might experience anxiety due to being away from home that can cause accidents, even in the most well-trained dogs.
Getting Dog Care Help When Away
Every pet parent knows that you simply cannot always predict what is going to happen – emergencies can happen out of the blue, or you may run out of some important supplies. For that reason, it is important to do some research beforehand. For example, you should:
- Find the nearest veterinary service and find out what the emergency options are. That way, you won’t start to panic if something happens.
- Find the nearest pet store in order to know where to go if you start running short on supplies – and don’t forget to note the opening times.
- Look around in order to see whether there are any local pet-sitting services. That way, you could easily spend a day without your dog if that would be absolutely necessary.
- You should also see if there are any doggie-day-care centers where your dog can stay while you are doing other things.
Planning Is the Key!
The most important thing is to plan in advance, even when you are just starting to consider what your destination will be. If you plan to go to an urban area, it is mainly about finding what extras might be available – pet spas are quite popular, for example. However, if you are planning to go into an area where such services aren’t widely available, you should plan ahead and do your research – that way, you will have no issues if unexpected problems or sudden emergencies arise.
