Recent news of dogs being lost and killed has made many pet parents wary of taking their dogs along on trips that require flying, which is why i Love Dog-Friendly took on the task of finding the top two dog-friendly airlines.
1. JetBlue
JetBlue gets high marks for animal health and safety, pet-friendly amenities and for refusing to let pets fly in the cargo area. JetBlue also has a JetPaws pet program. It’s free to join and includes the following:
Pet carrier bag-tag
Travel Petiquette
300 TrueBlue points
JetPaws welcome email
Free Pet Travel Guide
The bad news is that your dog and carrier cannot weigh more than 20 pounds combined. Also, your pet carrier counts as your one carry-on, and only one pet is allowed per customer. The fee to fly your pet is $100 each way.
2. Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines stands out from the other two because it allows a diverse array of pets to travel in-cabin, from small dogs and cats to guinea pigs and small birds. Their fee is $75 for one-way. And just like JetBlue, your pet carrier counts as your carry-on.
Honorable Mention: AirTran
For a mere $69, one-way, you can fly with your small dog, cat or bird. There is, however, a limit of six pets per flight, so book early. There is no weight restriction, but there is a height restriction. Your carrier cannot be taller than 8.5 inches, or longer than 17 inches.
